Sustainability - at the heart of The Wave

At The Wave we believe our business can be a force for good. In order to do this we are careful with our decision-making, challenge our thinking and always consider the balance and trade-offs to be made. We consider the effect of our decisions on our profit, the people around us and the planet share. This is based on the ‘triple bottom line’ of sustainability – or our 3Wave thinking as we we call it.

Sustainability requires that the system does not make a loss in any of the three elements – profit, people or planet. Our business must be financially sound so we can repay the investors who helped us build our amazing facilities and to allow us to continue to deliver a great visitor experience.

We also need to do right by people, looking after those who work for us, those who work with us and those who visit us. Environmentally we are continually striving to be resourceful and to find ways to minimise our environmental impact. Our ethos encourages all to interact thoughtfully with one another and the wider environment.

The UN’s 1987 Bruntland report Our Common Future defined sustainable development as ‘development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.’

This is an ambitious but achievable ideal and we have built it into our business. At first glance, our projects are simply cool, engaging and fun. Scratch the surface, however, and you will find that The Wave gets right to the heart of some of the issues facing society today. We want to enhance the lives of many different people, from many different backgrounds in the surrounding communities and beyond.

Climate Surfers

One of the biggest ways to tackle the climate crisis can come from cutting our own carbon emissions: flying less and driving less, eating less meat and wasting less food, switching to renewable energy and insulating our homes and buildings. But what are the links between surfing and the climate crisis?

Into The Blue – What surfing means to me

When I was a boy, my happiest times were when I was by the water: fishing, sailing, swimming but especially surfing with my dad.
