Learn To Surf This Summer

by Milly McDermott

Female surfer celebrates catching a wave.

"The best surfer out there is the one having the most fun. "

Phil Edwards

Fresh air, cool water and the exhilarating feeling of catching your first wave, learning to surf is the perfect adventure to embark on this summer!

Surfing is more than just a sport, but also a gateway to a healthier, happier you with benefits to your mental and physical wellbeing. Join the millions (estimated 20-35 million worldwide!) who have already embraced it.

MIND, BODY AND SOUL

Surfing is a fantastic way to experience the benefits of blue health. Being near or in the water has been shown to boost your mood, reduce stress, and even improve your physical health. You can read more about that in the UK Surfing and Health Report, an in-depth survey carried out by The Wave and the University of Bristol to investigate the relationship between surfing and wellbeing.

JOIN A COMMUNITY

Surfing is a great solo sport, but it’s also a chance to connect with like-minded people. Meeting fellow surfers in the water, sharing experiences and advice – it’s a recipe for forming friendships and feeling part of something bigger.

GAIN CONFIDENCE

Learning a new skill is a great confidence booster, and surfing is no exception. It takes practice, but isn’t the challenge part of the fun? Every time you pop up on the board, you can feel pride in your progress.

Ready to Catch Your First Wave? Here’s What You Need to Know

Okay, you’re convinced – surfing is awesome! But before you grab your wetsuit, there are a few things to keep in mind:

FIND A SURF SCHOOL

There are fantastic surf schools all over the world with lessons for every level! You’ll find the perfect program to get you up and riding in no time. If you’re not sure what lessons to take, ask a surf coach – they’ll help you understand your level. Try our Wave Academy, a handy tool shaped by our expert coaches to help all our waveriders progress from any starting point.

GEAR UP FOR SUCCESS

If you’re new to surfing, you may not want to invest in your own wetsuit and board just yet. Most surf schools will have all the essentials available to hire. Top tip! The bigger and more buoyant a board is, the easier it is to catch waves! Our boardroom has a great selection of boards to try out, plus we host free demo days throughout the year with our friends at Firewire and Boardshop.

SURFING ETIQUETTE 101

Ocean or wave pool, these are shared spaces, and surfers tend to follow basic etiquette to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience. Learning these basic rules will help you fit in and avoid any wipeouts caused by misunderstandings. Check out this handy guide from Surfing England.

EMBRACE THE LEARNING CURVE

Mastering a new skill takes time, energy and patience, so be kind to yourself. You’re probably going to fall off a few times, but that’s part of the fun. Just get straight back on and try again!
